l****z 发帖数: 29846 | 1 PARIS—France's ban on face-covering garments took effect Monday, sparking
protest from Muslims—some of whom wear head-to-toe robes—and causing
confusion over the law's application.
The law bans people from covering their face in public, but with some
exceptions. A violation can result in a €150 ($217) fine as well as
citizenship lessons to inculcate French republican values of tolerance and
respect for human dignity.
Authorities say full veils are a symbol of repression and stand against
France's secular values. "These are principles that we can't compromise,"
French Interior Minister Claude Guéant said Monday after a news conference
in Luxembourg. |
