Call it a case of the “Right” stuff for all those big network hits.
TV’s top-rated shows are watched by more people who identify themselves as
Republicans — with left-leaning voters more likely to watch lower-rated
shows, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Megahits like “Modern Family,” “American Idol,” “The Big Bang Theory”
and
“The Mentalist” are all GOP faves — while niche shows, including “Mad
Men,”
“Dexter,” “90210” and “Kourtney & Khloe Take Manhattan,” top Democrats
’
lists.
The Hollywood Reporter based its report on data compiled by Experian Simmons
,
a media-research company.
"Mad Men" fan? Chances are you lean left politically, according to a new
report.
“The big shows with mass appeal tend to have above-average scores from
Democrats and Republicans, but with higher concentrations of Republicans,”
says John Fetto, senior marketing manager at Experian Simmons.
“Looking at the Democratic side, I don’t mean to make light of it, but
they
seem to like shows about damaged people.
“Those are the kind of shows Republicans just stay away from.”
The most popular shows on both sides of the aisle are, no surprise,
politically oriented: in the GOP ledger it’s Fox News Channel’s “Glenn
Beck”;
over on the Democratic side, the nod goes to MSNBC’s “Countdown with Keith
Olbermann.”
Among entertainment shows, CBS’ “The Amazing Race” leads for Republicans
—
while Dems favor “Mad Men,” which pulls in just 2 million viewers each
week
on AMC.
“Historically, the shows that have done better are populist, mainstream and
give us confidence in our public institutions,” TV historian Tim Brooks
tells
the Hollywood Reporter.
The top three cable networks among GOPers are Fox News Channel, Golf Channel
and Weather Channel; over the Democratic side it’s BET, SoapNet and Style
Network. |
