Government-Run Rail System Losing $32 per Passenger, Study Shows
Tuesday, October 27, 2009
By Kevin Freking, Associated Press
A skycap stands next to an Amtrak train in New York's Penn Station. U.S.
taxpayers spent about $32 subsidizing the cost of the typical Amtrak
passenger in 2008, about four times the rail operator's estimate, according

Public transportation should always be subsidized. What's wrong with that?
Keep in mind that in taking the train, those passengers are not creating
much less noise, pollution or greenhouse gas than those who drive a car to
work on a daily basis.
So yes, those car drivers should subsidize them.

I think the issue here is losing too much money. $32 per traveller...
Probably some management issues.

Obviously you know little about business/economics and assume all industries
are most efficient if privatized.
Public infrastructure is not for making profits. It is to provide service
with a reasonable return. For example, if all the power plants are private
and not regulated, guess how much your electricity bill will go up?

Hell.
go f*cking look at this,
http://www.allbusiness.com/government/government-bodies-offices-regional-local/12909744-1.html
During such a depression as of now,
...
Against this backdrop, the push by the executives of the massive
Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to raise the pensions of
MWD's 2,000 employees by 25 percent isn't just a disappointing error in
judgment. It is madness.
...
MWD just raised water rates by 19 percent and intends to raise rates again
by 12 percent nex

Regulation != participation. The FDA
has many very good reasons to regulate the food industry, but that
doesn't mean that FDA should get into the sausage making business
itself.
That said, I personally think that it is probably necessary to subsidize
Amtrak from a "public service" standpoint. However that does _not_
become a valid argument against that private enterprises tend to be
more efficient. IOW, government-run entities are inherently and
almost inevitably less efficient, but

Don't know how they are still losing money. Amtrak is so ridiculously
expensive.
A ticket from NYC->Boston could cost $150 even $200 one way, and you can
just pay $25 by taking the bus
at Chinatown. And they both take about 4 hours. I guess those working
for the Amtrak must all have six figure
salary.

National Highway System
What are the competition?
automobiles, buses, trucks, and aircraft, all of which were heavily
subsidized by the government road and airport building programs.
Who ultimately has such f*cking power?

没有国有化在先,铁路在高速公路的竞争面前也不会不堪一击。
另外高速公路的运输后来也被管制了。

Amtrak is subsided $136,000 per employee each year by taxpayers.
"Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008", was signed into law by President Bush
on October 16, 2008. The bill appropriates $2.6 billion a year in Amtrak
funding through 2013. Amtrak employs nearly 19,000 people.
