一．凡蒙有效恩召并重生的人，既在他们里面有了新心和新灵被创造出来，便藉
着基督的受死和复活（林前6:11；徒20:32；腓3:10；罗6:5，6），并祂那在他们里面内
住的圣道和圣灵（约17:17；弗5:26 ；帖后2:13），进一步达到个人实际的成圣；罪在
我们整个身上的权势被除灭（罗6:6，14），此身的各种邪情私欲也逐渐被削弱、治死（
加5:24；罗8:13），并且他们在一切与救恩相伴的美德上（西1:11；弗3:16－19）越来
越清醒、坚固，以致能够行出真正的圣洁来，因为人非圣洁就不能见主（林后7:1；来1
2:14）。
二．这种成圣贯穿全人（帖5:23），但在今生仍不完全；人的各个部分之中仍然存有某
些败坏的残余（约壹1:10；罗7:18，23；腓3:12），从而，情欲与圣灵相争，圣灵和情
欲相争，这种争战无法和解，持续一生（加5:17；彼前2:11）。
三．在这一争战中，虽然败坏的残余或许一时得胜（罗7:23），可是，靠着基督那使
人成圣的圣灵所不断供给的力量，重生的部分终必得胜（罗6:14；约壹5:4；弗4:15，1
6）；因此，圣徒会在恩典中长进（彼后3:18；林后3:18），因着敬畏上帝，得以逐渐成

Of Sanctification
I. They, who are once effectually called, and regenerated, having a new hear
t, and a new spirit created in them, are further sanctified, really and pers
onally, through the virtue of Christ’s death and resurrection,[266] by his
Word and Spirit dwelling in them:[267] the dominion of the whole body of sin
is destroyed,[268] and the several lusts thereof are more and more weakened
and mortified;[269] and they more and more quickened and strengthened in al
l saving graces,[270] to the practice of true holiness, without which no man
shall see the Lord.[271]
II. This sanctification is throughout, in the whole man;[272] yet imperfect
in this life, there abiding still some remnants of corruption in every part;
[273] whence ariseth a continual and irreconcilable war, the flesh lusting a
gainst the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh.[274]
III. In which war, although the remaining corruption, for a time, may much p
revail;[275] yet, through the continual supply of strength from the sanctify
ing Spirit of Christ, the regenerate part doth overcome;[276] and so, the sa
ints grow in grace,[277] perfecting holiness in the fear of God.[278]
[266] 1 Corinthians 6:11. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but
ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and b
y the Spirit of our God. Acts 20:32. And now, brethren, I commend you to God
, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give y
ou an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. Philippians 3:10. Tha
t I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of h
is sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; Romans 6:5-6. For if w
e have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also
in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is cruci
fied with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we s
hould not serve sin.
[267] John 17:17. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. Ephesi
ans 5:26. That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by
the word. 2 Thessalonians 2:13. But we are bound to give thanks alway to Go
d for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning
chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of
the truth.
[268] Romans 6:6, 14. Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him,
that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve
sin.... For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the
law, but under grace.
[269] Galatians 5:24. And they that are Christ?s have crucified the flesh wi
th the affections and lusts. Romans 8:13. For if ye live after the flesh, ye
shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, y
e shall live.
[270] Colossians 1:11. Strengthened with all might, according to his gloriou
s power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness. Ephesians 3:16
-19. That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be st
rengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell
in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be
able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and dept
h, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that
ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
[271] 2 Corinthians 7:1. Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, le
t us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecti
ng holiness in the fear of God. Hebrews 12:14. Follow peace with all men, an
d holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.
[272] 1 Thessalonians 5:23. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; a
nd I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unt
o the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
[273] 1 John 1:10. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, an
d his word is not in us. Romans 7:18, 23. For I know that in me (that is, in
my flesh) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how t
o perform that which is good I find not.... But I see another law in my memb
ers, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to t
he law of sin which is in my members. Philippians 3:12. Not as though I had
already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I
may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
[274] Galatians 5:17. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spir
it against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that y
e cannot do the things that ye would. 1 Peter 2:11. Dearly beloved, I beseec
h you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war again
st the soul.
[275] Romans 7:23. But I see another law in my members, warring against the
law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in
my members.
[276] Romans 6:14. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not
under the law, but under grace. 1 John 5:4. For whatsoever is born of God ov
ercometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even
our faith. Ephesians 4:15-16. But speaking the truth in love, may grow up in
to him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: From whom the whole bo
dy fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth,
according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh incr
ease of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
[277] 2 Peter 3:18. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and
Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. 2 Corinth
ians 3:18. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of t
he Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the
Spirit of the Lord.
