Similar to Amillennialism, this view claims that the kingdom of Revelation 2
0:4 is primarily Christ ruling in the hearts of His people (the Church). Acc
ording to the postmillennialist this reference does not refer to a literal t
ime when Christ will return to earth and set up a kingdom since the church i
s said to set up the kingdom as a result of Christ ruling in their hearts. R
evelation 20:4 needs to be interpreted figuratively in this system to once a
gain mean that Christ is ruling His kingdom only in a spiritually sense thro
ugh His people in the world today. The postmillennialist believes that the t
housand-year reign of Christ in Revelation 20 is figurative and represents a
time when Christ reigns in the hearts of believers to give them victory. Th
is in return will eventually usher in a time of earthly rule that consists o
f peace and prosperity on planet earth.
In short, the Millennium of Revelation 20 is not a literal kingdom rule of C
hrist on earth but Christ reigning over His people in a spiritual kingdom to
day. It is really the rule of Christ in the hearts of men (Luke 17:21). As m
en come to faith in Christ and submit to His rule the promise of the kingdom
is seen on earth in a greater way. More people being converted bring the pr
omise of the kingdom that much closer. Wherever men believe in Jesus Christ,
commit themselves to Him, and obey Him, the kingdom is present and spreadin
g. The kingdom is not something that is to be introduced cataclysmically at
a future time when Christ returns. In actuality, the kingdom is here and now
. It is growing gradually like leaven (Matt. 13:33) as we head toward the ti
me when peace will reign on earth. The kingdom is arriving by degrees upon p
lanet earth. It is being introduced progressively. Of course, this is shoddy
theology because it rejects the literal interpretation the Bible. The kingd
om is not here on planet earth today in any spiritual form. The kingdom is a
prophetic event that deals with the future reign of Jesus Christ upon plane
t earth (Revelation 19:11-16). You will note that it's King Jesus who is goi
ng to judge the world and establish His kingdom - not the church (Revelation
14:14-20). |
