我的天主，请许我一谈你所赐与我的聪慧和我滥用聪明而做出的傻事。有人给我一项使
我灵魂不安的功课，做得好可得荣誉，不好则失颜面，并以鞭挞威吓我。这课文是叫我
写朱诺女神因不能“阻止特洛伊人的国王进入意大利”[32]愤怒痛心而说的话。我知道
朱诺并未说这类话，但我们不得不想入非非，追随着神话诗歌的踪迹，把原是用韵的诗
，另用散文敷演。谁能体会角色的身份，用最适当的词句描摹出哀愤的情绪，这人便算
高才。
我朗诵时，听到极盛的喝采声，胜过其他许多同学和竞赛者。唉，我真正的生命、我的
天主，这为我有什么用处？这一切不是烟云吗？为训练我的聪明和口才，没有其他方法
吗？主，对你的赞颂，圣经中对你的赞颂之辞，本该支撑我心苗所长的枝叶，不至于被
浮华所攫去，为飞鸟所啄食；因为祭祀叛逆之神不仅限于一种方式。

CHAPTER XVII
27. Bear with me, O my God, while I speak a little of those talents, thy

all in the most suitable language. What is it now to me, O my true Life, my
God, that my declaiming was applauded above that of many of my classmates
and fellow students? Actually, was not all that smoke and wind? Besides, was
there nothing else on which I could have exercised my wit and tongue? Thy
praise, O Lord, thy praises might have propped up the tendrils of my heart
by thy Scriptures; and it would not have been dragged away by these empty
trifles, a shameful prey to the spirits of the air. For there is more than
