As "foreigners" living in other countries, I think we understand their
situations in China... (at least I do)

comparison with shanghai:
I wouldn't trade Tianjin for Shanghai either. The locals in Tianjin are, for
the most part, the nicest people in all the places in China have been to.
Don't even get me started on Shanghairen.
I conducted a social experiment in Shanghai once: I walked up to people with
a map to ask simply which road I was on. I asked a total of 56 people (in
Chinese) and out the 56 only 2 were willing to help and even they looked
like they were trying to get it over with as quickly as possible. The other
54 people blew me off with the usual hand waving gesture the moment I
opened my mouth.
In Tianjin I failed at conducting a similar experiment because people would
usually just see me looking at a map and then walk up to me, try to help me,
offer to take me to where I was going etc...

comparison with Xi'An
You've heard my horror story of the first school I worked for (and that was
just the tail end of it). Living in Xi'an, I would end up in a physical
fight at least twice a month. Not with some guy who just didn't like
foreigners - but with some guy who didn't like foreigners with a cellphone
who called all his friends. Lesson learned = a crowd of 10+ Chinese guys is
surprisingly easy to fight off.....they just push for the most part (and
call you "white devil" and tell you to go back to America). I'd be walking
down the street only to have a van of people pull up and start a fight.
Happened far too often. I'd be sitting on the street enjoying a beer with a
new friend, starting to feel comfortable, starting to like the city....and.
...partyvan arrives.
Friends of mine there ended up in the hospital for weeks - as we walk out of
a club, 30+ guys are waiting for us....because a black friend of ours had
danced with a Chinese girl and someone didn't like it. There was a
construction site across the street ... they all had bricks. Two guys run
and get in a cab - the cab driver turns off the car and gets out. They
smash the windows and drag them out. Doctors were picking glass out of them
for days. A girl with us was held down and whipped with belts. Even
though we put that to an end and right quick, she obviously still left 2
days later.
Due to my past experiences, I will be wary of interaction with people in
China *forever*. But in TEDA, for the most part, I am greeted and treated
with kindness and respect. Everyone here, Chinese and foreign alike is
extremely friendly, personable, and good to be around. I wouldn't trade
TEDA for Bali, let alone Shanghai.

stories about landlords in Tianjin: (I can tell 10 stories like this too..)
Just thought i would throw in another story that has just happened.Shame on
me though for being a sucker. My landlord jacked me one moth deposit. When
renting a very very sweet old lady turned into a banshee that was somewhat
possessed. I want bother people with the details of this long winded and
tiresome story.
In a nutshell, when your moving out, tell your landlord to bring the one
moth deposit with them on the day, so as they tick everything off the list,
check everything, and give it to you on the spot. NEVER EVER believe that
person regardless of all the B.S friendly history you have.

comments about middle-aged women:
Yeah.
When we moved out in January of last year and into a new apartment we got
stuck paying the full winter's heating charge for both apartments. The '
nice' lady at the place we were moving out from changed quite quickly. Same
story...
Fear the middle-aged Chinese women, they will eat you alive.

kind people but bad business practices:
Happily I have met some kind, sincere, honest, friendly, well travelled and
aware natives here who are now among my closest friends anywhere. All in a
non-business context, I must point out. My day-to-day treatment by the
Chinese has been exemplary. My one brush with work, a teaching job, went
sadly awry - as soon as I signed the contract, the terms-of-reference
changed. A HK friend, now working in BJ, commented, "welcome to China(town)
." Since I didn't need the work, I ripped up the contract.
