a simple one, if you have a weak hand, for example 99, against a limper, you
raise 3x pre and get called. flop comes as K52 two suited, he check calls
your c-bet. turn is 3 off suit, he checks and you feel uncomfortable to fire
another barrel (either stack size or his stats or whatever), so you check
behind. river is T off suit, he checks again, what do you do now?
you have a made hand from the beginning, but not improved. on this board,
very likely he's weak chasing a flush and doesn't hit. but he could also
have weakish PP like 88, 77, 66 or even naked AJs alike..., or he could be
deep sick trapping with a set, 2 pair... or he could be chasing a flush with
ATs and pairs up on the river?... hard to tell.
you feel if you bet here on river and get called/raised, you're most likely
beaten. but if you two both check and go to showdown, you have a good chance
(value) to win against hands like 77, 88 or busted flush draws in a "safer"
way, or your marginal hand is still the best.
another typical example is you got AQs, chasing for a flush draw but missed
on a board of 77263, your aggressive opponent fires one small barrel pre and
another small one on the flop. but after turn, he checks twice to you,
should you bet the river? maybe in x% of times, but in the other y% times,
you may want to go to showdown because your hand might be the best, even it'
s only ace high. same as above, you can't bet and then get called/raised,
otherwise your hand is almost valueless, and you have to fold.
