HOUSTON - Several people have been charged after federal agents raided a
home in the upscale neighborhood of Hedwig Village in West Houston Tuesday.
Agents raided the $1.6 million home of Shan Shi, 52, off of Buckingham,
seizing property and carrying out boxes of potential evidence.
Shan is accused of creating a company in Houston and hiring employees to
allegedly steal trade secrets from a Houston company which manufactures “
syntactic foam.”
Shan’s suspected network of spies included: Uka Uche, 35, of Spring; Samuel
Ogoe, 74, of Missouri City; Johnny Randall, 48, of Conroe, Kui Bo, 40, and
Gang Liu, 31, of Houston.
They have all been arrested and charged as well.
Federal prosecutors say Shan hired the men by paying them cash incentives
and steep salaries to secure manufacturing secrets related to the syntactic
foam.
Two of the men worked at the unnamed Houston company that was the target,
others were former workers there.
Federal prosecutors contend Shan would then sell the trade secrets to a
state-run Chinese company. Prosecutors say China has made it a priority to
develop its marine-engineering industry.
Syntactic foam has both commercial and military uses, such as oil
exploration, aerospace technology, underwater vehicles, submarines and
stealth technology.
The defendants face up to 10 years in prison if convicted. |
