The Department of Transportation Studies (DTS) at Texas Southern University
(TSU), Houston, Texas, is recruiting graduate students who are interested in
pursuing either a master’s or Ph.D. degree in the fields related to
transportation. Full sponsorship in the form of Research Assistant (RA)
will be provided to qualified applicants.
TSU is a member of the Tier One National University Transportation Center,
TranLIVE, through its Innovative Transportation Research Institute (ITRI)
and a member of the Southwest Region University Transportation Center (SWUTC
) through its Center for Transportation Training and Research (CTTR). It is
also a leading institution of the National Transportation Security Center
of Excellence for Petrochemical Transportation (NTSCE-P). Recently, TSU
received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in its Center of
Research Excellence in Science and Technology (CREST) program to establish
a Center of Research on Complex Networks (CRCN). The areas of graduate
studies at TSU focus on traffic safety, roadway geometric design, traffic
signal controls, transportation network modeling and simulation,
transportation environment, transportation policy, transportation logistics,
and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The study at the Ph.D. level
will specifically emphasize issues related to the vehicle emission modeling
, transportation and air quality, and other topics related to transportation
environment. TSU provides top-of-the-line research facilities in
transportation, including a full-motion driving simulator, a mobile traffic
lab, a MiniTranStar lab, a portable emission measurement system, and a full-
motion flight simulator.
Students who are interested in the graduate study in transportation at Texas
Southern University are preferred to have a strong background and/or great
interest in computers and statistics, and demonstrate a high level of
proficiency in technical writing and communication skills. A background in
transportation is not required. The past and current students in the DTS
have come to the program with backgrounds in civil engineering,
transportation engineering, computer science, electrical engineering,
mathematics, physics, business, economics, biology, public affairs, law, and
English. The essential oral and writing English skills may be tested by
interviews.
