Boris Becker published his book a few months ago, but there is still much
talk about its contents. The former Wimbledon champion not only spoke about
the lack of exuberant characters in tennis nowadays, but also about Roger
Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic comparing them to the players who
there were when he played.
'Why have players who have not created rivalries? I make an example: Michael
Stich and I got along well and everyone knew it. Now we're good friends,
but at that time we were happy to say that we weren't friends. And they
asked us every time we had to face each other. It made life more complicated
especially because our wives at that time didn't get along. Once I said to
the media: 'Look, I've less friends, I think it's normal, and Michael is not
one of them, but that doesn't mean that I hate him, he's not one of my
closer friends.
'One of the secrets more known on the tour is that Roger Federer and Novak
Djokovic don't get along. The same thing was with me and Michael, they don't
hate and respect each other. But when Roger was world no. 1, the young
Novak made him angry when he used to call the doctor during matches. It's
totally natural that they're not close, they respect each other, but don't
get along.
'Who can judge what's good and what's not for tennis? Men's tennis is very
popular, the ratings are higher than ten years ago and it has happened
thanks to Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray and others. But I think that
ratings could be higher if we were able to see and know more about their
personalities and if this means (showing that) that someone doesn't get
along, I think it doesn't jeopardizes tennis (players) or their careers.
Obviously sponsors play an important role.' |
