Novak Djokovic falls to Andy Murray for the first time since Wimbledon 2013.
Novak Djokovic’s eight-match winning streak against Andy Murray is broken
after the Serbian’s Rogers Cup final loss on Sunday.
The World No. 1 entered the Montreal decider against the new World No. 2
with the statistics stacked heavily in his favour, but would ultimately fall
short 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
He was contesting a career-best ninth straight ATP World Tour final dating
back to this year’s Australian Open and riding a 12-match winning streak in
ATP Masters 1000 finals since falling to Roger Federer in the Cincinnati
decider in 2012. He had won his past 30 ATP Masters 1000 matches.
“Well, you never like losing, but any streak comes to an end. I'm fine,
you know,” Djokovic said. “I did fight till the last point and did try my
best. That's something that I take as a positive from this week.”
Murray’s victory marked just his ninth in 28 meetings with Djokovic. He had
not beaten him since claiming the Wimbledon final in 2013 and despite the
pair being back atop the Emirates ATP Rankings, Djokovic refused to call it
the next great rivalry in the men’s game.
“I think we already have a rivalry. It's not the next. It's already
existing there for many years,” he said. “Andy is deservedly a winner
today on the court. I thought what made the difference was his serve and my
serve. I didn't serve well the first set and a half. After, I just wasn't
able to serve. But not taking anything away from him, from his victory. He
deserved it. He stepped in, played some great shots. Most of all the
moments when he needed to, he served very, very well.”
With Murray surging to 3-0 in the deciding set, the Serbian was now
regularly looking at his right elbow in discomfort. He refused to relinquish
without a fight though, surviving three championship points at 2-5, before
the Scot closed it out 6-3 on his fifth match point.
Djokovic remained upbeat it would not hinder his upcoming Cincinnati or US
Open campaigns. “It was unfortunate, came at the wrong time,” he said. “
But I guess because of the overload in a way, it's understandable. We played
over two and a half hours to that point. So the elbow suffered a little bit
.”
He admitted in the battle of the 28-year-olds, this was an improved Murray,
a better player than the man who denied him in the 2013 Wimbledon decider.
“Certainly from the perspective of the serve, yes,” Djokovic said. “Also
he has been aggressive in certain moments when he needed to. I think it was
a good-quality, high-quality match, generally. But this is what is expected
. When we play each other, we always kind of take the best out of ourselves
. We need to deliver the best game possible in order to win. That's what
he did, and I congratulate him.”
Djokovic heads to Cincinnati now hoping to become the first singles player
in history to complete the Career Golden Masters by winning all nine ATP
World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments. | f*****n
