mainly because his low toss, compact service motion and quick closing in to
the net.
My take is Nadal stands too close to the baseline in this match. For most of
his career, Nadal literally stands near the first row of the stand,
therefore bunker down on the baseline is not Nadal's comfort zone. Aside
from that, because Brown is closing in quickly, Nadal's pickup return is
just in tune with Brown's first volley.
Tactically, Brown did not want to give Nadal any rhythm, he chip and charge,
slice and dice, drop shot, and go for broke, basically junked the crap out
of Nadal. He executed well, and caused Nadal to miss some routine shots.
Typically Nadal doesn't get bothered by these kind of play, I wonder if this
has to do with his confidence and mental. He seems a bit tight in today's
match.
On Nadal's serve, deuce side, Brown left a lot room on his FH side open, yet
Nadal did not take the advantage to pull him off the court. I feel if Nadal
served more wide serves, he may get more rallies, and get some rhythm going
. Instead he went with his slice serve down the middle. It typically works
well against righties, but Brown took his chance, step in and went after it,
hit or miss he'll follow up to the net. Therefore the point ended rather
quickly, Brown was able to conserve energy for his service game and prevent
Nadal from find a good rhythm.
Congrat to Brown, he deserves the win. Other than the confidence issue, I
still feel Nadal is a force to be reckon with.
