ticket, but I was now aware of its limitations. Some days we lived like
royalty, rubbing shoulders with the elite; other days, we were lightly

taught me that I was not entitled to a vacation home or a round-trip ticket
to the earth’s wild edge. And in losing those luxuries, I realized there
were other, intangible things that could not be taken from me: memory,
tennis, love. Feeling the salt on my face and the cobblestones beneath my
feet again, a sense of belonging blossomed within me. It sprang out of a
deep friendship with myself, and invited me to ignore the invisible ladders
life tempts us to climb.
