Open title may not be an opponent but time itself.
A recent crackdown strictly enforcing the amount of time players have
between points has frustrated several professionals but the limit will be
reduced further come next week's Australian Open.
An irate Austrian Jurgen Melzer became the latest player to run foul of the
25-second rule between points in Auckland yesterday in his loss to Sydney's
Greg Jones but in grand slam events the limit is cut further to 20 seconds.
It is a rule with the potential to damage Djokovic who, with Rafael Nadal,
is notorious for pushing the time between points to the limit. In years past
the world No 1 had a habit of bouncing the ball well into the teens before
serving on critical points, although he has improved significantly in that
area.
It is no coincidence that Djokovic and Nadal played the longest-ever grand
slam final in Melbourne last year - 5hr 54min - given the pair were
consistently clocked taking 30-35 seconds between points.
