there is few more details. However, a few more information emerges. Firstly,
there were several ships from US and Southeast Asian allies in the midst of
an exercise when the incident occurred. Secondly, the sonar was not to
survey the sea floor (as I thought yesterday) but to detect a submarine. Of
particular import is neither nation (US, China) states publicly if either
or both detected the other.

Fact: US holds naval exercises with Southeast Asian nations annually.
This year, China dispatched a submarine to spy on the exercise. It had to be
near the sea surface, using periscope.
Both US naval ships and the Chinese submarine knew precisely where the other
was. Because the Chinese sub was in the baffle of the USS John McCain, the
sub thought it was safe from detection. Warships from American and allies
pretended it did not know.
