term because their financial statements do not tell much about their
business details.

sponsoring/advising companies are substantially free from most federal
regulations. Unlike mutual funds or other banking operations, which are now
heavily regulated and thus financially transparent, private funds are
allowed to operate in certain degree of opaqueness. This is because their
customers are all either extremely wealthy or very financially sophisticated
--thus no need of governmental protection. |
