SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Twitter Inc.(TWTR) will post its first
financial report as a publicly-traded company this week, on the heels of a
rally in social media shares sparked by Facebook(FB) and Google's(GOOG)
upbeat reports last week.
But Twitter (TWTR) will also report at a time when analysts have grown more
cautious, arguing that the stock has become overvalued, especially after a
steady runup since the San Francisco company's initial public offering in
November.
Twitter will report fourth-quarter results after the market closes on
Wednesday. Analysts polled by FactSet on average expect the microblogging
service to post a loss of 2 cents a share, on revenue of $218 million. The
company's shares have more than doubled since going public in November with
an initial public offering price of $26.
The gains were propelled mainly by rising expectations that the company,
which has not been profitable but has more than 230 million users, is well-
positioned in a rapidly growing mobile ad market.
But some analysts increasingly have become concerned about Twitter's
valuation. Only a third of analysts has a buy rating on Twitter as of this
week, compared to 45% in late November, according to data from FactSet.
Roughly 70% analysts currently have either a hold or sell rating.
However, last week's reports from Facebook(FB) and Google(GOOG) , which
point to a robust online ad market, particularly in mobile, sparked another
rally in social networking and Internet shares, including Twitter.
"We think the read-through from Facebook's(FB) results was broadly positive
for Twitter, especially in terms of highlighting monetization growth," RBC
Capital'sMark Mahaney told clients in a note.
But other analysts maintain a cautious stance.
"Is Twitter soaring too high?" Wunderlich Securities analyst Blake Harper
asked in a note to clients. "We expect Twitter to report strong top-line
growth in its advertising business, given advertisers' willingness to
experiment with the service, which should be offset by continued heavy and
necessary R&D investments. We believe the company is moving in the right
direction with its Tailored Audiences and mobile ad products."
'Tailored audiences' refers to the new feature Twitter introduced recently
which gives marketers better ways to target ads. The announcement of that
feature also sparked a stock rally.
Sterne Agee's Arvind Bhatia noted that investors have high expectations as
Twitter prepares its report.
"We continue to like the Twitter platform and believe in the company's long-
term prospects," Bhatia told clients in a note. "However, we remain neutral
given the stock's significant premium to its high growth peers."
RBC Capital's Mark Mahaney said "visibility into Twitter fundamentals is
admittedly limited."
But he has a buy rating on the stock, as he pointed to improvements in
Twitter's advertising platform. Citing an RBC survey with Ad Age, Mahaney
said "Twitter advertising spend is likely to increase" with "60% of Twitter
advertisers" indicating that they expect their budget to increase "in the
next year."
"We remain positive on Twitter's ability to become one of the Web's leading
utilities alongside Google(GOOG), Amazon(AMZN) , Facebook(FB)," he told
clients in a note. "Twitter has displayed very robust growth in key metrics,
and we have confidence that this momentum can continue as the company
develops its advertising platform." | r******3
