Ackman was leaving the board, but are now at the lowest levels of the day,
off more than 3%. How come?
One word: short selling.
Now that Ackman is off the board, he's free to sell his stake in the company
. With Ackman owning nearly 18% of the company, short sellers know this, and
volume in short selling has grown dramatically in the past few days.
This morning, I said J.C. Penney would trade eventually trade lower, as his
stake is now free to sell.
In an email to TheStreet, SunGard's Astec Analytics Tim Smith notes that
volume has grown about 30% in the past 10 days. "In Astec Analytics'
database, JCP has been the most heavily clicked on stock and the price to
borrow has started to move up towards the 'heated' if not 'very hot' levels
of around 2 to 3 per cent on an annualized basis. Even though this is not as
high as seen in March, the trend is definitely upwards in terms of volume
and cost of borrowing."
J.C. Penney is scheduled to report second-quarter earnings results next week
. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters are expecting a loss of $1.06 per share
on $2.78 billion in revenue.
Being that Ackman was on the board for the second quarter, he most likely
can't start selling until the company reports. Once the company reports,
however, all bets are off. Including, most likely, Mr. Ackman's.
