A few thoughts:
-- the economy of the whole world is actually getting better: the companies
making money as they are coasting the whole world for more efficiencies,
people's livelihood are improving over the past few decades, especially in
China (from what I saw first hand, almost everyone is enjoying the fruit of
the last three decades. It is true that folks are not happy, as they figure
they could have been happiER, well, I saw that as actually an engine of
aspiration by itself)
-- of course, the folks in the US and the West in general are in a deep hole
, as the subprime fiasco demonstrated. There's no obvious solution for them,
but that is OK (I was reading "The Decline and Fall" the other day, and
found out the R empire actually was declining for many many centuries, and
the Romans are practically enjoying a very high standard of living through
out the "decline", the real miserable people were the barbarians, who fight
tooth and nail for sheer survival)
In short, the world as a whole is getting better and better, and in ever
accelerating clips, while the West may endure some pain seeing their glories
days diminished, their lives are still pretty good ones for years and years
to come.
