(Reuters) - Monsanto Co (MON.N) shares were up 1.8 percent on Tuesday on
rumors Germany's BASF (BASFn.DE), the world's largest chemical maker, would
bid for the global biotech seed company.
A tie-up with Monsanto would give BASF a deeper footing in the United States
and help it compete with agricultural rivals, including DuPont's (DD.N)
Pioneer unit and Dow Chemical's (DOW.N) DowAgroSciences unit.
BASF and Monsanto declined to comment.
Missouri-based Monsanto's shares were up 1.8 percent at $68.35 in afternoon
trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The stock had traded as high as $68.
67 earlier in the session.
Shares of BASF fell 2.8 percent to 62.59 euros.
"Monsanto shares and front-month call options are active on unconfirmed
rumors that BASF is interested in the company," Jon Najarian, co-founder of
Chicago-based brokerage firm TradeMonster, told Reuters.
Investors often turn to equity call options, which grant them the right to
buy the stock at a fixed price any time up until expiration, to speculate on
share price appreciation.
Monsanto's market capitalization is around $36 billion.
A banking source familiar with the matter told Reuters that BASF has no
current plans to buy Monsanto, though if it were interested, it would need
to pay at least 70 billion euros ($101.2 billion).
The two companies are rivals as well as collaborators, most recently
announcing an agreement to jointly develop dicamba tolerant cropping systems
similar to the highly successful "Roundup Ready" herbicide-tolerant
genetically modified crops for which Monsanto is known.
The system is expected to be introduced in the United States and Canada in
the middle of the decade, pending regulatory approvals.
The two companies also have established a research and development
collaboration to develop other new genetically modified crops for farmers.

Last time I sold all of my POT just two days before BHP would buy POT.

Actually I bought MON from last year at 65,58,50 and scared to death when it
dropped to about 45 (I did not buy at this price). Finally sold gradually
at 65,70 and 75.
I bought it again after its QE. However I am not strong enough to hold this
time.

第一，看了一眼52周股价，最高76，最低44. 目前在70左右，偏高。所以现在这个价钱
买就是比80%-90%的人买的高。捂帮更喜欢在50左右买，买的比80%-90%的人便宜。
第二，MON最大的风险是政治风险，有些环保主义民族主义者会不遗余力攻击转基因。
万一正好出点事，被搞可能也不小。此外我认为随着生物技术尤其是测序技术的飞速提
高，MON的种子被山寨也不奇怪。这个领域你花大力气筛选出一个有效的转基因可能花
了5-10年，我克隆一下只要1-2年。 |
