Ingrid Lunden, On Friday February 11, 2011, 3:09 am
Nokia (NYSE:NOK - News), which today announced a broad strategic partnership
with Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT - News)
using its Windows Phone platform, has now also given some details on its new
company structure and the people who
will be charged with running it. Some definite executive upheaval but not
quite what had been reported.
In an announcement, Nokia said that the Nokia Leadership Team, formerly
known as the Group Executive Board, will
have the following people on it: Stephen Elop, Esko Aho, Juha Akras, Jerri
DeVard, Colin Giles, Rich Green, Jo
Harlow, Timo Ihamuotila, Mary McDowell, Kai Oistamo, Tero Ojanpera, Louise
Pentland and Niklas Savander.
Alberto Torres, who had been running Nokia’s MeeGo development, has stepped
down from the management team,
effective February 10 to “pursue other interests outside the company.”
There is also now a new company structure, composed of two business units:
Smart Devices and Mobile Phones (note
the disappearance of services as a separate unit). They will focus on Nokia
’s key business areas: high-end
smartphones and mass-market mobile phones. Each unit will have profit-
and-loss responsibility and end-to-end
accountability for the full consumer experience, including product
development, product management and product
marketing.
Interesting to note in the details below that Nokia seems to be intent on
keeping Symbian and MeeGo running, while
also pursuing the alliance with Microsoft.
More details from the release:
Smart Devices will be responsible for building Nokia’s leadership in
smartphones and will be led by Jo Harlow. The
following sub-units now in Mobile Solutions will move under Smart Devices:
- Symbian Smartphones
- MeeGo Computers
- Strategic Business Operations
To support the planned new partnership with Microsoft, Smart Devices will be
responsible for creating a winning
Windows Phone portfolio.
Mobile Phones will drive Nokia’s “web for the next billion” strategy.
Mobile Phones will leverage its innovation and
strength in growth markets to connect the next billion people and bring them
affordable access to the Internet and
applications. The Mobile Phones unit will be led by Mary McDowell.
Markets will be responsible for selling products, executing compelling
marketing and communications, creating a
competitive local ecosystem, sourcing, customer care, manufacturing, IT and
logistics across all Nokia products. It will
be headed by Niklas Savander.
Services and Developer Experience will be responsible for Nokia’s global
services portfolio, developer offering,
developer relations and integration of partner service offerings. Tero
Ojanpera will lead the Services and Developer
Experience unit in an acting capacity.
NAVTEQ (NYSE:NVT - News), an integral part of Nokia’s location and
advertising business, will be headed by Larry
Kaplan, and continue as a separate reporting entity.
The CTO Office will be responsible for Nokia’s technology strategy and
forward-looking technology activities, including
Nokia Research Center. It will be headed by Rich Green.
Design, responsible for Nokia product and user experience design, will be
led by Marko Ahtisaari.
The CFO Office, responsible for all financial activity, will be headed by
Timo Ihamuotila.
Corporate Development, responsible for driving implementation of Nokia’s
ecosystem strategy and strategic
partnerships, will be headed by Kai Oistamo.
Corporate Relations & Responsibility, responsible for Nokia’s government
and public affairs, sustainable development
and social responsibility, will be led by Esko Aho.
Human Resources will be led by Juha Akras.
Legal and Intellectual Property will be led by Louise Pentland. | k********n 发帖数: 18523 | | k********n 发帖数: 18523 | 3 Nokia Oyj, the world’s biggest maker of mobile phones, said it’s forming a
software partnership with Microsoft Corp., a bet that together the two
companies can better challenge Google Inc. and Apple Inc.
Shares fell as much as 9.8 percent, after the Finnish company’s plan to
move to Microsoft’s Windows as its primary software platform was seen as a
sign of the depth of its challenge taking on Apple’s iOS and Google’s
Android platforms.
“It’s a clear admission that Nokia’s own-platform strategy has faltered,
” said Ben Wood, a London-based analyst with CCS Insight. “Microsoft is
the big winner in this deal, but there are no silver bullets for either
company given strength of iPhone and Android.”
Stephen Elop, the new chief executive officer of the Espoo, Finland-based
company, is struggling to revive the company after Nokia’s piece of the
fast-growing smartphone market plummeted to 27.1 percent last quarter from
50.8 percent when Apple shipped its iPhone in June 2007, according to
Gartner Inc. The company has lost more than 60 percent of its share value in
that time.
Nokia’s shares fell to as low as 7.4 euros today, trading 8.8 percent lower
at 7.44 euros as of 10:09 a.m. in Helsinki.
Microsoft, whose Windows Mobile software licenses were doubling annually
before the iPhone hit the market, has likewise struggled to win acceptance
for its revamped Windows Phone 7 software. The Redmond, Washington-based
software maker said it shipped more than 2 million licenses for the new
smartphone system in its first quarter on the market.
Comeback Plan
Nokia said today that after its ``transition years'' of 2011 and 2012, it
targets Devices & Services non-IFRS operating margin of 10 percent or more.
Elop, 47, was hired away from Microsoft in September to put Nokia on a
comeback plan, especially for software, the biggest point of difference in
smartphones. He made only small adjustments in his first months as he
reviewed the business. He announced 1,800 job cuts in the workforce of more
than 120,000, adjusted the development process for the Symbian smartphone
code, and appointed a new marketing chief, Jerri DeVard.
Since Elop became the first non-Finn to head Nokia on Sept. 21, Google’s
Android software has become the biggest smartphone operating system, passing
Nokia’s Symbian, according to Canalys and IDC analysis of shipments. The
company’s N8 smartphone with the revamped Symbian 3 operating system was
greeted by analysts as an improvement, although not enough to reverse the
slide.
Debt Watch
Both Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s put the company’s debt on review for a
downgrade after fourth-quarter net income fell 21 percent and the company
signaled margin pressures. The ratings agencies said the numbers pointed to
a further loss of competitiveness in the crowded smartphone marketplace.
Android, which is supported by mobile manufacturers including Samsung
Electronics Co., HTC Corp. and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB,
offers users a slick interface similar to the iPhone for a lower cost of
ownership.
Android phones typically have more flexibility in data plans than the iPhone
, and make it easy to use virtual calling programs like Skype that reduce
monthly bills. The system has proven popular with app developers who have
built its Android Market up to more than 100,000 download items.
Google Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt said last month that his company
is activating more than 300,000 phones a day.
Nokia started as a wood pulp mill in 1865 and expanded in papermaking,
rubber, cables, and telephone equipment before helping develop the world’s
current cellular phone systems in the 1980s. It passed Motorola Corp. to
become the world’s largest maker of mobile phones in 1999, and was Europe’
s most valuable company at 203 billion euros in December 1999.
