BUENOS AIRES, June 14 (Xinhua) -- The Copa America football tournament could
be delayed due to the presence of volcanic ash over Argentina after the
eruption of Puyehue volcano in Chile, Argentine Football Association (AFA)
president Julio Grondona said on Tuesday.
"We are paying close attention and it doesn't seem like other countries are
prepared to come to Buenos Aires," he said Tuesday during an interview with
a local radio station.
Nevertheless, he said that the tournament is not at risk and that he is
confident the situation will be resolved.
"The championship is scheduled to begin on July 1, so let us wait over the
next five or six days to see how the situation evolves," he added.
The tournament is due to open on July 1 in La Plata, Argentina, at 9.45 p.m.
(0045 GMT) when Argentina will face Bolivia in the A group stage that also
includes Colombia and Costa Rica.
Brazil face Ecuador, Paraguay and Venezuela in the group B, and Uruguay will
head the group C along with Chile, Mexico and Peru.
Puyehue volcano, about 2,240 meters high, is located in the Andes Mountains
in southern Chile and erupted 10 days ago for the first time in half a
century, spewing large quantities of ash in the southern provinces of
Argentina, a phenomenon which has moved its way to the central part of the
country, Uruguay and the south of Brazil because of the changing wind
direction.
More than 1,100 flights have been canceled during the last nine days in
Argentina due to the presence of volcanic ash. |
