very late in having a credible smart phone operating system, has cast doubt
on the longevity of the tablet.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports on a lunch held by the Committee for
Economic Development of Australia (CEDA), at which Microsoft’s global chief
research and strategy officer Craig Mundie was speaking.
Mr. Mundie said he did not know whether tablets like the iPad would “remain
with us or not”.
“I think there’s an important distinction – and frankly one we didn’
t jump on at Microsoft fast enough – between mobile and portable,” he said.
“Mobile is something that you want to use while you’re moving, and
portable is something that you move and then use.
“These are going to bump into one another a little bit and so today you
can see tablets and pads and other things that are starting to live in the
space in between. Personally I don’t know whether that space will be a
persistent one or not.”
This is a surprising statement to come from Microsoft which has long been a
champion of tablet computing.
Bill Gates predicted in late 2002 that “the Tablet is a PC that is
virtually without limits—and within five years I predict it will be the
most popular form of PC sold in America.”
A version of Windows XP, the Tablet PC edition, was released in early 2003.
In 2005, Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, displayed a Lenovo tablet at
Microsofts’ TechEd Conference. And in 2010 he announced that the company
would be working with HP to create a tablet running Windows 7. It was
released in October of that year.
Meanwhile in 2010 Apple launched the iPad. It sold nearly 15 million devices
world wide that year. |

I can tell you the next main wave is touch based mobile computing + voice
recognition
gesture input? that's the next next wave. kinect is the best we can get
but still not there yet
