OLYMPIA - The Washington State Department of Health says they are conducting
ongoing air monitoring for radiation to see if the nuclear plant incident
in Japan has affected radiation levels in Washington and have found no
elevated readings.
The agency's Radiation Protection staff expects no health risk in Washington
, and the monitoring is precautionary, according to a press release.
The Department of Health said air sample readings in the state remain normal.
Even in the event of a significant release from the reactor, radiation would
be diluted before reaching our state and levels would be so low no
protective action would be necessary, officials say. | W***i

Washington state health officials monitoring the nuclear-plant incidents in
Japan say there is currently no danger of exposure here.
Air monitoring shows no elevated radiation levels, said Department of Health
spokesman Donn Moyer.
In a worst-case scenario, a nuclear meltdown could release radioactive
isotopes, including iodine, that could reach the U.S. West Coast in six to
10 days, Dr. Ira Helfand, of Physicians for Social Responsibility, said in a
briefing Saturday.
Even in the worst-case scenario, Moyer said the possibility of people in
Washington receiving significant radiation doses is slight. | g*****A
