Computerworld - A prominent Wall Street analyst on Friday declared that
Windows Phone 7 has seen a "successful launch" and that Microsoft will
heavily market the new platform further, leading to a possible pitched
battle between WP7 devices and Android smartphones that would leave the
iPhone on top.

I see the same problems in Android that have plagued WinMo for the last 10
years. If Google doesn't get some control over this platform then it will
become a mess. Namely:
1. There are no minimum specs for Android so you will get some good and some
woefully under powered phones.
2. Any OEM can make a phone and add their own items and cusotmizations
seemingly without limit. This will cause bloat. I saw that HTC is building
Sense for Android -- oh brother.
3. Google allows the OEM to use any UI they want.
Look back at WinMo and this lack of control eventually crippled the platform
to the point where no one knew what the real WinMo looked like, OEMs
eventually had their own code branch to support their cameras, radios, and
other unique items.
Now combine these items (which happend a lot in WinMo) and you get a slow
processor, a difficult to use HTC Sense UI, and a phone loaded with bloat
you couldn't remove. HORRIBLE experience.
Whats a shame is that you remove the junk and the native WinMo 6.5.x is a
fantaistic platform with tons of apps. Sadly, the only people who get to see
this are the technically minded people who know how to download custom ROMs
. Which, by the way, the WinMo custom ROM community is thriving.
One mistake Google avoided that Microsoft did not was the marketplace model.
In WinMo ANYONE could build an app and sell it however they wanted. You
could buy it from a perosnal website, a store, or the WinMo marketplace.
Googletakes the apple approach and forces people to use a single store.

A Nokia alliance could strongly bolster Windows Phone, however, and that
could go a long way toward explaining the silence from Microsoft since that
system's launch in October: Perhaps the software giant is getting ready to
overhaul Windows Phone to accommodate the needs of a major new partner with
access to huge global markets. The effects could be wide-reaching and,
hopefully, quite positive.
