（52岁，charles l. fefferman）。此公12岁学完微积分，17岁毕业于
马里兰大学，20岁拿到普林斯顿博士，22岁在芝加哥大学晋升正教授，
24岁完成的论文最终获得费尔茨奖，也就是数学的诺贝尔奖。这些成就
还不是他最传奇的。数学界有一个关于费佛曼教授的口头传说。说他17
岁读研究生时，有一天教授在黑板上列出“本学科历史上的十大难题”。小费
那天迟到，不知原委，以为是教授布置作业。只管抄了回去。一个星期之
后，两眼红肿的费佛曼找到教授，大发牢骚：“你怎么给这么难的作业？
我几天没睡觉，也只作出了四道题，实在是没办法。只能做多少交多少
了。”那教授差点没晕过去。

Unhappy with abstract mathematics, the only courses he enjoyed being on
statistics, Dantzig decided to give up his graduate studies. He moved to
Washington where he worked as a Junior Statistician on a project "Urban study
of consumer purchase" at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics from 1937 to
1939. Having read statistics papers by Neyman, Dantzig wrote to him in 1939
