Not sure, but bright spot at the tip sounds like charging. How did you prepare
your sample? What substrate the tubes are on?
I am not aware of any difference in the orgin of image contrast in FESEM and
conventional SEM. They are only different in electron source.
Have you tried using EDX to see the metal partical? Maybe the resolution is
not enough.
