I recommend Xfig, buy it runs with Unix/Linux. For Windows,
there is a walk-around, i.e., install Cygwin + Windows + Xfig.
Xfig produces beatiful linedrawing and sketches, together
with LaTeX, you will write excellent technical and scientific papers.
Forget about Word.
