the bottom of the conduction band is given by,

So for Eg<>EB, Me* ~ M0.
The physics is that the conduction band and valence band tend to repell each
other. When they are closer (Eg smaller), the dispersion of bands is repelled
more strongly such that they have larger curvature, corresponding to smaller
effective mass.
