allegedly killed an Oakland gardener for his gold necklace and iPod have
been charged with murder, police said today.
David Lee Hall and three boys, ages, 15, 16, and 17, are accused of shooting
42-year-old Antonio Torres as he was on the job May 20 in East Oakland. The
youths' names have not been released because the Alameda County district
attorney is charging them as juveniles.
Torres was working in the front yard of a home on the 1600 block of 34th
Avenue in the Fruitvale neighborhood at about 1 p.m. when four young men
confronted him, said homicide Sgt. Mike Gantt. An argument erupted, and
Torres was robbed and shot.
The assailants ran north on 34th Avenue, police said. Police found the four
suspects on surveillance video footage and released it to the public.
A tipster came forward and identified one of the juveniles, whom the tipster
had heard bragging about having shot Torres, Gantt said.
Police believe the four targeted Torres because he was wearing a gold
necklace and was listening to his iPod. Both items were stolen, police said.
"These individuals were out hunting for victims," Gantt said.
Hall, who was arrested Thursday, is being held without bail at a downtown
Oakland jail. The youths are being held at Juvenile Hall in San Leandro.
