SAN JOSE, Calif. - February 19th, 2011 - Today eBay announced a significant
change in its commission fee policy. Previously, for auctions, it charged a
tiered insertion fee up to $2 and a final value fee of 9% of the sale price
up to $50. For buy-it-now listings, it charged an insertion fee of $0.50 and
the final value fee of up to $0.25. The new poloicy, effective immediately,
will charge a 30% commission of all sales, and the cap will be removed.
Furthermore, ebay mandates that a seller using its service cannot sell the
same item with a lower price anywhere else than its reserve or buy-it-now
price on ebay.
eBay's announcement explains the policy change this way:" Our philosophy is
simple - when eBay brings a new sale to the seller, eBay earns a 30 percent
share; when the seller makes a sale elsewhere, the seller keeps 100 percent
and eBay earns nothing," said John Donahoe, the eBay CEO. "All we require is
that, if a seller is making an offer outside of eBay, the same (or better)
offer be made inside eBay, so the customers can easily buy with one-click
right on eBay. We believe that this innovative sale/auction service will
provide sellers with a brand new opportunity to expand access to their
merchandise onto eBay, delighting both new and existing buyers."
According to people familiar with the matter, eBay's move was motivated by
Apple's recent change in its Apple Store's subscription model. eBay
executives believe the value they bring to eBay sellers is even bigger than
what Apple brings to its Apple Store developers. "Apple's App Store is just
one store, and eBay hosts hundreds of thousands of virtual stores. If Apple
can charge a 30% fee, why can't we?" eBay CEO John Donahoe asked in a
meeting, people familar with the matter said.
This announcement caused uproar in the seller's community. An unnamed seller
complained that this new commission would cut all his margins and force him
to find somewhere else. "I guess I'd have to do my business on Amazon
Marketplace now if this policy isn't reversed."
But eBay fanboys are cheering across the world. "I've been looking forward
to this day for two and a half years." an eBay buyer claimed, mimicking
Steve Jobs' famous line in his 2007 keynote. "I think with the innovation
eBay brought to its online auction market, it is entitled to a bigger cut
than what it was charging before." Another buyer sniffed at the possibility
that some sellers would have to withdraw from eBay, saying: "It's not about
the sellers. It's not about eBay getting money either. It's about eBay's
superior buyer experience. eBay protects buyers personal and payment
information, providing a far safer online purchase experience." A third
buyer commented blatantly: "It's eBay's market. It can do whatever it wants.
