Sounds excellent! $160
Sony's "ES" series is the Sony’s high-end "flagship" line of products, much
as their best TV's carry the XBR moniker. The 555 is the middle model of
its ES receivers, and it's a fine product that offers abundant features,
good quality and - best of all - good sound.
Manufacturer description
After building the phenomenal TA-E9000ES Digital Preamplifier, Sony's next
challenge was to create an A/V Receiver equally qualified for the new age of
home entertainment. The best decoding of Dolby Digital and DTS (Digital
Theatre System) signals was just a start. Sony also demanded power
amplifiers that deliver the sound with full impact. And Digital Signal
Processing that places multi-channel digital sound into the ultimate
playback environment. The result of these efforts is the STR-DA555ES
Receiver. It offers high precision decoding for both Dolby Digital and DTS
sound tracks. Like the TA-E9000ES, sonic accuracy is maintained by Sony 32-
bit DSP, Sony digital filters and D/A converters. So multi-channel digital
sound is converted to analog with spectacular dynamics. Sony delivers those
dynamics to your speakers with a power amplifier worthy of high-end separate
components. The typical IC op amp is replaced with discrete push-pull
transistors. Equal power to all five main channels does full justice to
Dolby Digital's full-bandwidth surround channels. And FTC/UL 4-ohm ratings
mean the Receiver is fully prepared for today's speakers. These designs mean
that you'll hear movie sound tracks with the same dynamics, the same
clarity, and the same brute force that you experienced in the theater. And
Sony has accounted for the acoustical differences between your living room
and a movie theater, so you hear movie sound tracks exactly as the movie
director intended. Thanks to all these technologies, the STR-DA555ES makes
DVD movies and music video titles come alive as never before.
