A Look Back at a Look Back: Ironman's First 10 Years

Triathlete Magazine's 1988 retrospective on the early years of Ironman
racing - starting in 1978 with 15 starters and 12 finishers.
In October of 1988, Triathlete Magazine published a year-by-year review of
the first decade of the Hawaii Ironman, written by then-editor, C.J.
Olivares. Ironmanlive.com correspondent T.J. Murphy --- also former editor
of Triathlete --- revisits the special edition's tribute, "10 Years of
Ironman."
Ironman I
Date: February 18, 1978
Location: Waikiki Beach, Oahu
Entry Fee: $3
Starters: 15
Finishers: 12
Winner: Gordon Haller 11:46
Gordon Haller wins the first Ironman in 11:46
"John Dunbar, a former Navy Seal, leads most of the race. But during the run
, he becomes dehydrated and exchanges the lead several times with Gordon
Haller, a Honolulu cab driver. Dunbar's crew gives him some beer, and within
minutes, he is drunk and delirious, stumbling into parked cars. Haller
pulls away from Dunbar decisively at 21 miles, and goes to cut the tape,
running the last five miles in an amazing 31 minutes."
The first Ironman was posed as a test to see who was the toughest endurance
athlete: the long-distance swimmer, cyclist, or runner. The winner of the 2.
4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile event, said Navy Commander (and the
man credited with creating the race), John Collins, "we'll call the 'Ironman
.'" Ten years and 11 Hawaii Ironmans later, the original debate was not only
unanswered, but more complicated: triathlon had burgeoned into an endurance
sport of his own.
Now, a quarter of a century later, with Ironmans blooming around the globe,
the original question is long forgotten. A more fascinating, individual, and
ultimately inspiring question has become the heartbeat of the sport: 'Who
can't take on the Ironman?' Answers to this question have smashed through
barriers for athletes-in-waiting from all corners. Examples: Walt Stack (73
years old, 1981), Dr. Jon Franks (first wheelchair competitor, 1994), and
300-pound Darryl Haley, (1995).
