Answer: nothing. I did this when I was back last winter. I tried to give them
more to prove my status, but the lady at the bank refused to take anything extra.
She told me almost all the applications are approved (I don't see why not). So
I didn't bother. I think the US embassy is doing it for efficiency (they know
it's a waste of time for both of them and you if making it complicated) and more
profit (you have to pay RMB 200 EXTRA). And frankly they a
