Facebook cofounder Chris Hughes has written the North Carolina General
Assembly asking it to reject a proposed constitutional amendment banning
same-sex marriage and has pledged to donate $10 for every person who “likes
” Equality North Carolina’s page on Facebook — up to $10,000 — by
Tuesday.
A native of Hickory, N.C., Hughes wrote that he understands the difficulties
of growing up gay in the South and says the ban on marriage equality “will
only perpetuate this stigma for a new generation of creative, talented
youth, uninterested in second-class citizenship in a state they call home.
“The next Facebook or Apple or Google could be created by another North
Carolinian,” he continues. “Be mindful of how you treat them and their
families.”
The funds raised by Hughes and his fiancé, political activist and
philanthropist Sean Eldridge, will help Equality N.C. fight the amendment. |
