Got accepted to berkeley mfe, intend to attend, but would like to hear about
more opinions so i can make an informed decision.
Any input is appreciated. Mocking/sarcasm welcome too, but please indicate
as such so i won't confuse your reply with real facts.
Physics phd, graduated last year, not big name school, Interviewed with
several companies before graduation, wasn't able to land an offer eventually

currently at houston, oil industry, ~100k.
I'm not relying on the mfe to boost my finance knowledge or coding skills. I
'm mainly hoping that its career service would give me some edge in securing
and offer, and the one year of time that i can focus on interviewing
without distraction from work.
Hope to get a front office position, not so crazy about developer positions.
reasons to switch: not particularly interested in current work. not a big
fan of houston heat either. I'm betting on that the market has turned around
, and quants won't become obsolete even as the industry undergoes drastic
change. Obviously i could be very biased here.

In addition to the reasons already mentioned, the market for my current job
field isn't looking good, and probably won't pick up in the coming years.

这个program只要一年，课程很紧，中间有3个月实习
就业状况应该说是很不错的，不管找实习还是全职，基本上所有的人都能找到实习（不
一定都是很好的公司），到毕业时已有1/3的人拿到全职工作。工作方向好像以quant为
主（不确定）。
据说这是全美最好的MFE program之一（我不懂这方面，讲错请勿喷）
这些人毕业的薪水我不太清楚，听说十多万的很普遍，也许在金融领域不值一提吧，我
不懂不评论。
我接触的感觉是这program的学生背景很杂，有刚本科毕业的，也有工作了几年的，也
有读了数学物理phd等转行来读的。 |

issue for me.
I was thinking about transferring back to h1b right upon graduation,
assuming that i could lock an offer before graduation of course. Is it too
risky a bet?
Anyone who could shed some light on this matter? Very much appreciated.

attending the program. I made good friends and learned a lot from the
program. Love the program and always a strong advocate for it. You should
seriously consider it.

trader
大部分buyside pm不能算是trader，不管是做fundamental还是quant，因为都有自己的
investment thesis，不是靠trading本身赚钱

degree或者拿到degree时候没有申请过 在这个MFE后应该还有OPT.还有一种少见的情况
是如果上次申请master level OPT的时间少于12个月 剩下的部分这次可以再申请.
这种问题应该直接问program的小米 他们处理类似的case肯定很多

我记得有人quit了phd去当trader的。可能是因为在08年前都坐不住了，迫不及待地投
入市场，不愿意浪费时间等到毕业了。

找个聪明的本科生就能胜任，干吗去做那种反传统的事

The experience in Cal is really great. I learned a lot and met a lot of
friends. PhDs can find a job easily (prior exposure to finance will be a big
plus). You won't regret it.
Targeting a trader position is not realistic though. Quant research and algo
trading will be a good start.
