and I worked with some most brilliant mathematicians. Caltech, MIT, Hvrd,
Prstn top grads.
and to become a 300k making full prof, what I have to do? minimum 2 year's
postdoc, when I make 50k a year; 3 years ass prof, when I make, you said,
120k? you wish, maybe in B-school; If I was lucky to make tenure, 3 years
ass prof before full prof. that s 8 years before I could supposedly make
300k? That s a very long and round about way to make money.
On the other hand my professor in grad school does have his own patents and
a company and probably make 7 figure a year. though he's a physics professor
, not math. ivy school I d add :)
plus, please do not mix research grants and compensations. 60k in salary +
60k in grant, is not equal to 120k income. research grants are for you to
hire students, postdocs, travel to conferences, buy equipments.
granted you can buy a nice mac book pro with research fund, you can not use
research grant to buy youself a car, a big house, unless you have very low
ethical standards.
to sum up, a math professor might contribute to the greater good more than
us bottom feeding wall street quants, but money wise, you have to be
comparing top math profs with bottom quants. otherwise it does not hold
water, even on per hour pay basis.

money, i.e. they become "comparable" somehow, outcomes of the comparisons
must not be the same for different people because of different perference
curves they have (espeically when you talk about marginal effects). Not
mention that one thing he is good at is unlikely the one others are good at,
and vice versa.

So by his own standard, he s not a top math phd, not to mention a best of
the best math professor. Obviously that particular breed "do not go to
Wall Street IN GENERAL". Nonetheless I did work with people who gave up math
assistant professorhood to come to work in an I Bank.
He has no problem spilling out myths for facts either, which is very
dangerous. Ass. Prof. earning 120k? well, those in B-school probably do even
better, but for math and science people? great stuff he was smoking.
And to defend his claims of 120k ass. prof, 300k full prof, 600k Chinese
full prof, in mathematics! He argues that you do that by taking money from
research grants, which is even more dangerous and ridiculous.
Do college professors make good money? many do. But they do so by doing
consulting jobs, openning their own high tech companies (like my grad school
boss did), some B-school faculties are successful hedge fund managers.
One of the most successful mathematicians, was also one of
the most successful hedge fund managers. Guess what he did? He quit math
professor job and became the full time CEO of Renaissance Technology. There
is one best of the best math professor going into finance.

大成果的人。他数学上最有名的结果是和陈省身做的Chern-Simons form。但换到quant
finace这边后，他就是top前几个了。
不过两面综合一起看，James实在是神人，不知道多少年才能有一个

不过你说这个"做好多年出大成果"也要看怎么理解。他离开学术界的时候已经40岁了，
先生当年神勇， 23岁PhD毕业。所以要能出大成果不管性格合适不合适，年数是绝对够

我是物理出身，对物理里不常用的数学分支没有什么认识，所以对 Chern-Simons 印象
比较深。见笑。
Simons好像当初还没退出学术界就不务正业，炒期货。又一个例证，math professor
pay sucks.
