Terrible introductory book! If you already know functional programming *very
* well then this book is a good Scala introduction. If you don't know
functional programming or Scala, then this book is useless.
The author assumes that a tiny amount of explanation is sufficient to
achieve full mastery by the reader. Unless you understand every paragraph
110% the next paragraph (and chapter) are meaningless.

A better title for this book would be "A Jihadist's Guide to Functional
Programming (using Scala as an example)". If you think that functional
programming will take over the world and in pure form is suitable for
industrial scale problems, this may be the book for you. But if you're a
deeply experienced software engineer and just wanted to get an idea of what
Scala is all about, look elsewhere. It's so preoccupied with telling you
about the virtues of functional programming that it skims over the pretty
abstruse complexities of the Scala language. Verdict: there must surely be a
better introduction to Scala for experienced programmers.

The very first words of this book are "this is not a book about Scala". The
book you're looking for is probably [[ASIN:0321774094 Scala for the

I was disappointed by this book, largely because every few paragraphs, there
are exercises you are supposed to go off and do, and if you want to see the
actual code, you have to go to the author's git hub page. So, you basically
need to read this sitting at a computer - not bedtime reading. That is not
what I was after at all. If the author really doesn't want me to
accidentally cheat by seeing the code before I go off and undertake the
exercise, at least put the code in an appendix so I can decide for myself
whether I want to see the solution without getting out of bed, firing up the
computer and navigating to his website. In the absence of the coded
solutions, it is hard to grasp some of the more abstract discussions. And it
does get very abstract very quickly. And, fair enough, the topic is
Functional Programming with scala as just the vehicle, so if you're wanting
to learn scala or enhance your understanding of scala idioms and whatnot, I
would say this is not the place to look.
On the plus side, if you buy the paper book, this publisher gives you access
to other electronic formats for no additional cost.
