International Business Machines Corp. is suing Priceline Group Inc.,
claiming the online travel company built its business on IBM’s inventions
and owes it royalties on the billions of dollars in revenue allegedly made
from IBM’s patents.
In a civil complaint filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Delaware, IBM
said Priceline and related websites, including kayak.com and opentable.com,
use IBM’s patented technology and repeatedly refused to negotiate a license
to the patents in question.
The company behind punched cards, floppy disks and the Jeopardy-winning
computer system known as Watson said it first notified Priceline in 2011
that it was infringing on several of its patents.
“Priceline has refused to engage in any meaningful discussion on the merits
, resorting instead to delay and non-responsive answers,” IBM alleges in
its complaint.
Priceline declined to comment through a spokeswoman, citing a company
practice of not speaking on pending litigation.
Corrections & Amplifications
IBM is seeking royalties on the billions of dollars in revenue that it
alleges Priceline has received from the use of IBM’s patents. IBM hasn’t
specified a dollar figure for the royalties it is seeking. An earlier
version of this story, misstated the figure and misspelled IBM’s name in
the second paragraph. |
