JavaFX is kind of late, but SL isn't successful either.
Flex dominates nowadays.

I'm not sure Flash even counts as worthy competition to Silverlight.

90% of PC, while Silverlight is 25%, talk about worthy competition.

Isn't the gap just one Windows Update away from being filled? Not quite

M$ is not there to compete w/ Flash. In their eyes, Flash is a tool for
these artists and designers while SilverLight is a real platform, part
of their .Net strategies, that's why I say M$ is not that hell-bent on
fighting Adobe. It's these Adobe guys getting overly nervous.

Shouldn't it be just a windows update and everybody is on IE8? IE6 has
been there for like 10 years already. It's not happening.
If you are a content provider, what will you do when you know 75% of users
won't be able to render your website to begin with?

With more rich components added into html5, SL's future isn't bright.

k***r 发帖数: 4260 | 14 I'd like to also point out that install rate is not
adoption rate. IE might be installed on all the Windows
PCs but lots of people don't use it at all.
At one point, maybe silverlight will be forced installed
to all windows PCs (but i doubt it, because MS can't
even force installing security updates, let alone IE8,
let alone SilverLight), let's say MS gets desperate,
it doesn't mean the web sites will be using it, because
they've invested in Flash for years and years. Don't
count on them switchi

If it takes just a few clicks to set it up, I won't even bother whether
it's 75% or 0%.

Which is future really, H5 or SL? W/ SL I code a 3-tier web app in one
language, one platform through and through. That's lots more efficient than
doing it in H5 where I have to use Javascript on client side sth
else on server and handle all these unnecessary heavy lifting by self.

Yeah, command line consoles are thin enough. Are they gonna take over
from the fat GUI according to you?

Like I said, SL is not there to strike Flash out. Although the Flash
designers will not change their habit, millions Asp.Net programmers
would like to. When I was writing Asp.Net code, I got sick and tired
of all the client-side javascript hacks. I've been waiting for a real
.Net client for a long time.

Oh well, what a brilliant idea, and why did M$ come up with .net and
boasting language neutral to begin with? If you really want to do it
with one language, didn't java had that for like 15 years ago already?
What's so special about SL?

probably. If it's a public app, most likely not.
And you think M$ doesn't want to strike out flash?
Thank again :)
