Synthesis and Characterization of Two-Dimensional Materials
Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences, Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Reference Code: ORNL12-76-CNMS
Project Description
The Functional Hybrid Nanostructures group at the Center for Nanophase
Materials Sciences (CNMS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking to
fill a postdoctoral research position in a project focused on the synthesis
of two-dimensional (2D) materials and the
characterization of their structural, optical, and electronic properties.
Materials of interest include organic/polymer nanosheets, as well as other
inorganic 2D systems. This position will provide a unique opportunity to
perform research on the synthesis and assembly of new classes of organic
semiconductor 2D materials with single, atomically-thin membranes or stacks
of monolayer sheets, correlating fundamental understanding of their charge
transport and optical properties with the 2D structure of their interfaces
and stacks. The position provides exceptional opportunities for cross-
cutting research collaborations and will require active collaboration with
synthetic chemists, various types of physical and chemical characterization
tools, as well as in-situ characterization and electronic transport in order
to fabricate and characterize prototype electronic devices with tailored
interfaces and architectures that take advantage of characterization
facilities at the CNMS and neutron scattering at the SNS. The CNMS is a
collaborative nanoscience user research facility established by the Office
of Science, U.S. Department of Energy.
Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, materials science, and/
or related disciplines with a strong background in semiconductor 2D
materials, ideally with extensive experience in the growth of graphene,
organic/polymer 2D materials and inorganic 2D systems using CVD and other
chemical approaches. In addition, the applicant should have experience
optical characterization (UV-vis and PL), and other valuable experience (AFM
, SEM, TEM) for
the characterization of 2D nanomaterials and hybrid assemblies. The
applicant must have the ability to work in a team, interact effectively with
colleagues and external collaborators. A demonstrated ability to
communicate in English to international scientific audiences is essential.
Applicants must have received their highest degree not more than five years
prior to the date of application, and must complete all degree requirements
before starting the appointment.
