M. Stewart MD, PhD at the Center for Hypotension of New York Medical
College in Valhalla, New York. (www.syncope.org).
Our research concerns orthostatic intolerance and neurovascular regulation
with a current focus on postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS), vasovagal
syncope, and their relation to central and peripheral autonomic control. We
employ methods producing orthostatic stress (upright tilt) and simulated
hemorrhage (lower body negative pressure , LBNP) as well as respiratory,
pharmaceutical and exercise stressors while measuring vascular signals with
a variety of methods. These include transcranial Doppler and peripheral
ultrasound, near infrared spectroscopy, impedance and venous occlusion
plethysmography and ModelFlow cardiac output. We perform cutaneous
experiments using microdialysis and laser Doppler flowmetry to probe
responses to vascular mediators and oxidative stress using the skin as a
surrogate circulation. Systemic experiments are also performed. We have
recently augmented our techniques with peroneal microneurography to measure
muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) recordings and are particularly
interested in candidates with expertise in MSNA methods.
The applicant must have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent. Human and especially
circulatory laboratory experience is preferable. Writing and oral
communication skills are central. Eligibility for NIH post-doctoral
fellowship funding is important and requires U.S. citizenship or permanent
residency. Salary is determined by NIH postdoctoral fellowship stipend
levels.
