Author: mukund
Qiqi recently won the highly-competitive singles ping-pong ladder. Most
people expected him to make the quarter finals. But he won it all! And how!
His modus operandi involved theoretical research, data-driven research, game
-theory, and execution (despite failing systems). An act worthy of
publication. (Qiqi's cover is already blown, so this article does not
divulge anything that the ping-pong mafia already does not know)
Qiqi joined Google a about four months back and has been a regular at the
ping-pong table (after putting in many hours in at work). If you play Qiqi
at a casual game you would think that he is trying hard, but losing to you
because he isn't good enough at skill X, where X=backhand loop or poor
strategy or forehand smash depending on the day. This is lesser Qiqi. Most
people in the top 10 would beat and have beaten this Qiqi, generalizing
incorrectly that "I can beat Qiqi easily, though he is not bad".
But If you pay closer attention, which none of his opponents in the ladder
bothered to do, you realize that this is really explorative Qiqi, who is
trying to improve his skills. Game-theoretically, Qiqi never exposed
exploitative Qiqi till the ladder began, and that too this Qiqi was exposed
slowly, and only as necessary. Our hero quickly disposed off all his
increasingly harder opponents who came at him one by one like in a Chinese
martial arts movie.
Finally, however, our hero had to face the Big Boss, the man at whose hands
everyone expected his ultimate demise. (Big Boss is an amazing ping-pong
player, has won the ladder several times, and most people are clueless
against his serve.) Like in any martial arts film, he prepared well. He
recorded the semi-finals match with his Android device, complaining about
the lack of frame rate, and analyzed the Big Boss's weaknesses. He trained
hard to strengthen certain muscles that he knew he would have to use more
effectively. And he revealed his biggest trick for the last. He switched the
rubber on his paddle on his backhand side to "long pips". This allows him
to counter spin, and make the ball wobble. For more details on how this
works see [1].
And now for the finals. I did not watch this great best-of-7 game, but it is
now stuff of legend in the ping pong underground. Our hero, greater Qiqi,
on the back of his research and subterfuge raced out to a 3-1 lead.
Big Boss eventually adjusted and fought back. To compound matters, our hero
had been down with a severe cold for the past few days and began losing
strength in the legs. Soon the score of 3-3. In the final game, through
sheer physical determination, our hero prevailed 18-16. Both players had
many championship points!
On a different note, two weeks ago, our hero (definitely lesser Qiqi) wrote
a mail to the ping-pong mailing list advertising the sale of "used rubber".
We all had a good laugh.
P.S. by Qiqi: One important missing piece of the story is that my main
training partner has been my wife, with whom I can safely practice my secret
strategies. I made up a theory of "pingpong helps losing weight" to get her
motivated, which, well, hasn't really worked so far. I should thank her for
being so supportive, and for not minding the red marks I left on her skin
from power looping. | z*****0 发帖数: 983 | | v***v 发帖数: 5504 | 3 zan
