网上搜的太大路货，search committee的人看了有抄袭之嫌。
哪位前辈有好点的模版吗？

would not remember which one. She used to be the president of the American
Society of Cell Biology. She talked about some major things that search
committee wants to see and how she recruits junior faculty.If you dig deeper
on these two websites, you will find very good articles on this issue.
Cover letter is the first thing search committee members read.They want to
make sure your expertise is what they are looking for.Next, they want to
know where you get your Ph.D. (who is your Ph.D. advisor) and where you are
doing your postdocs (who is your postdoc advisor).If you are from top
universities or they've heard your advisors' name, they will continue to
read your CV and other materials.The unwritten rule is something like "If
you got your Ph.D. from Harvard or MIT, how worse you can be?" or conversely
"If you got your Ph.D. from a low level unvieristy, how good you can be?".
Here is how my cover letter is organized based on to my advisor's
suggestions. The length is about one page (a little bit over is OK) and it
needs to be very concise. You need four paragraphs:
1) First paragraph states that you are interested in which position (
sometime they post multiple positions)and where you saw it.Briefly introduce
you background and what you are doing currently at which University.Then
talk about why your are interested in their University and department (show
how much you know about them which could be found in the job ad or their
website).Convince them how your research and training make you suitable for
this position.
2) Talk about you undergrad and graduate educations, as well as the
research have done (plus you Ph.D. advisor's name). Emphasize your
achievement during your postdoc training (also advisor's name): your
findings and your major publications.Present your research plan in one or
two sentences, which must be very appealing to them.
3) State your teaching philosophy in a few sentences (they don't care about
whether you are good at teaching or not but they just want to make sure that
you know how to teach).
4) Conclude with statements of how you will contribute to the departmental
research and eduction.(something like collaborate with other faculty,
establish externally-funded research program, ...)
I am not sure whether my suggestions are good or bad. Hopefully, this will
make you confident in your own writing. |
