to study in theory the physics (not philosophy, mathematics, or
engineering) of quantum computing in solid-state systems and fundamental
issues in quantum physics. The topics include (1) many-body quantum
effects in quantum spin baths, (2) optimal control of quantum systems in
mesoscopic environments, and (3) physical effects in topological
