Make some comment on this field, recommend some good review papers? It seems
a very hot field, doesn't it?

已经hot过了,诺贝尔奖既可以看成是表彰两牛人在该领域的
贡献,又可以看成是该领域的墓志铭——算是盖棺论定吧。
你倒是可以看看O'handly写的modern magnetic materials:
principles and applications。建议看英文版,中文译版错误
不少,就怕以讹传讹。这个算是比较偏实验的人写的,没太多理
论推导,比较容易懂。书好像是02年的,但这几年在这个方面
没有太大的进展,这也是funding缩水的一个重要原因。

Well, one can essentially DEFINE "strongly coupling" by stating that the CFT
has a weakly coupled gravity dual.

not true. there are plenty of non-susy examples under control. Sakai-
Sugimoto model for instance.

well, that's not the point. the point is generically it's NOT
under control. and a S-S model has yet to be constructed
for 'cmth' of any kind. S-S is too special.
obviously if it was not so special, it won't be much noted :D
again, sorry to hijack the topics. it's nothing about
spintronics.

Already outdated? but many centers are trying to push nanoscale spintronics
further, there are many papers published each year. Can you also comment on
multi-functional materials such as multi-ferroics?

You can't criticize a method if there is no better alternative. Generically nothing is under control. The systems under control are either weakly coupled or integrable, or there is some simplification due to symmetries (such as supersymmetries).:)

i don't ever wish to criticize AdS/CFT as a method for what it was invented
for.
sure you can experiment around with the method on something else too. but
it seems at some point, it leaves the domain of validity.
it's not clear to me there's no better alternative. i would name lattice.
sure, you can't do lorentzian things in that framework, but i don't want
to bet on kovtun's papers being correct, and the other few authors who
started this. well, it seems already next year there's a workshop in

物理界基本上是被funding牵着鼻子走的,尤其是近二三十年,做物理的
人越来越多,而科研资金增长却跟不上,再加上生物以及很多交叉方向在
规模上的爆发,物理的资金环境差了。
控制科研资金的,按照我老板的话来说,基本上是一些不懂科学的律师出
身的政客,没有什么耐心。你高温超导吹得再厉害,纳米管哪怕能登月,
给你十年时间,如果没有什么应用前景,让他们可以对公众sale,funding
就基本给砍掉了。这也是为什么nasa的钱还是比较有保障的,因为这是人
家总统先生准备树的标兵啊。
工业界以前一直是另外一个科研支持的主要力量,但现在公司换手太快,
比这个研究,发现,到应用的周期还短。换句话说,投资得不到回报公司
就转手了。所以很多公司基本上不做基础研究,顶多专注于应用研究。
从高温超导,spintronics,纳米材料,graphene,这一路下来,每个方向
基本上是先对公众和政府sale;然后国家给很多投资,很多组都能分到一
勺羹;最后由于很长时间内没有进展后,funding缩水,只能留下那几个成
名的组;大多数人开始做另一个sale——又是一个类似的循环。
