moon for the majority of the night. As the park is about an hour and a half
from the city, we are hoping to see some nice dark sky there.
We arrived the park around 3pm, set the tents, went for fishing for a while
and scouted for a photo shoot spot, shot some sunset portrait, and went for
a BBQ.
10:30 pm, it was pretty dark already. We went to the photo spot to see if we
can get some photos. To our disappointment, the light dome from the city is
still pretty visible, camp fires from the campers around us, lights from RV
, made it very hard to shoot. So we decided to come back later.
12:30 am, most of the campers were asleep, but the light dome from the city
is still bad. We talked a bit if we should come back later and see if we can
get a better shot and decided not to. This might be as good as it gets. So
we took a bunch of shots. 30 seconds shutter, f/2.8, iso 1600. The lens is a
Rokinon 14mm f/2.8, and the camera is a Canon 5D III.
Ok, this is the image directly out of the camera. The milky way is visible,
which is good, but the light pollution on the bottom right is glaringly bad.
We need to try get rid of it in photoshop.
Now we created a curve, and mask to deal with the lower right corner. Now
the lower left corner start to bother me. I am going to get rid of that too.
created another curve, and mask. Now I think the brightness at horizon is
acceptable. The next step is to add contrast to milky way
Created another curve just to add contrast to milky way. It looks very odd,
as if my flash light is pointing to the sky and light up the milky way. We
are going to fix that, by add a gaussian blur to the layer mask, with 500-
1000 pixel radius. It really depends on the resolution of your captured
photo.
After blurring the layer mask, I think it start to look reasonable.
The final step is to apply a set of my actions to add some local contrast.
