Alright time for some EDUKASION~
Canon DSLRs such as T3i have what's called a "crop sensor", and cameras like
the 5D Mk 3 have "full frame sensors." Full frame sensors are 1.6 times
bigger than crop body sensors, so with the same 50mm lens, the full frame
will capture more of the field of view compared to the crop body. see
picture:
As you can see, the full frame 5D captured a bigger area due to the bigger
sensor.
Now, here's hgow it matters to you. A 50mm on a full body is what most
people consider a decent focal length. It's not too zoomed in, but not too
wide either. In order to achieve a similar field of view on a crop body, you
will have to take 50 and divide it by 1.6, because that's how much smaller
the sensor is. you get 31.25mm. With a 31.25mm lens, a crop body like the
T3i will take photos with the same field of view as a 50mm on a full frame.
But since nobody makes 31.25mm lenses, you go up to 35mm. Got it? no?
