这是校方今早发的一则全校通告. (简单搜了搜,发现几乎所有的学校都有 hate/bias
response team 或相应的 措施)。
I am writing to let you know that racist language was found in a bathroom
stall in the University Center today. It was immediately removed. A Bias
Response Incident report was filed, and the XXX Police Department is
investigating.
It is deeply disturbing that anyone would use hateful language in any
circumstance, let alone in such a cowardly manner. As a university
community, we condemn such actions.

这是早些时候的一件事。两个本科生在 halloween party 上装束扮成黑人歌唱家,无
意中触犯了一个sensative 历史事件,然后受到了一系列的 教育/道歉 等等(全校通
告,还汇报到了 他们所在的 兄弟会的 总部)。
Provost 的全校通告信:
“You may be aware of recent events around some of our students dressed in
certain Halloween costumes that were hurtful and inappropriate. You all were
sent an email from JXXX, Vice Provost for Student Affairs about this. He
also gave some explanation for why this kind of behavior is inappropriate. I
am sending this email to try to focus on what can happen next.
First, regarding the investigation into the incident, JXXX reports that the
two students involved were unaware of the historical context of their
actions and didn't foresee the potentially negative impact this could have
on members of this community. They are remorseful and will be
participating in ongoing educational dialogues. While this incident did not
occur in conjunction with, or at, fraternity sponsored events, these two
men are affiliated with a fraternity chapter. The chapter president has
already notified their national headquarters about the incident and they
will utilize their standards board to address this incident. In addition,
the chapter is actively working with several offices on campus to develop a
long term educational initiative focusing on multicultural competence and
cultural awareness.
On a broader scale, this kind of incident reveals that although our
University has made progress in building an equitable and respectful
community, we still have work to do. In particular, I think incidents like
this one, are rooted in ignorance and misunderstanding of cultures and
cultural values. While the resulting behavior can cause real pain, we can
seize the moment to do something about it.
We are, hopefully, a community of learners at a place where difficult
conversations are welcome, where differing views are respected, and where
challenging topics are raised. In that context, I urge all of us to find
better ways to teach and learn about cultures not familiar to us. Valuing
the array of cultures present on and near our campus will not only make our
campus community a better one, but will also better prepare our students to
excel in the even more diverse world cultures they will see and need to
thrive in beyond our university.
For faculty and staff who might like to talk more specifically about ways to
incorporate ideas about equity and social justice and about developing
difficult issues in their classes, GXXXXX has offered to be a point of
contact. GXXXXX is the Director of Faculty Development, and is currently
working with a number of faculty on this specific topic—how to promote
student understanding of equity and social justice effectively in their
courses. He is quite willing to connect with other faculty who might be
interested.
Students or student organizations who are interested in sponsoring
discussions or other educational events are invited to contact the Dean of
Students Office for assistance.
Events such as these recent ones are indicators that we are not yet where we
want to be as a community in terms of understanding, valuing, and
respecting cultures and cultural difference. We are, however, an
organization whose strength is in our ability to meet people where they are,
and provide a path to develop personally and intellectually. I welcome your
participation and leadership in that effort.
